ICS provides both Guidance and Academic Support services to students who are in need of assistance. Our support team is comprised of certified, highly qualified individuals who strive to support each student in their spiritual, academic, and personal growth. There is no additional cost for support services.
Guidance counseling (grades K-8) is designed to meet the needs of the individual student and is given by Mrs. Kate Severson. Individual and group meetings are held throughout the school day to help students at each developmental stage. Students are given skills, strategies and techniques to empower them to deal with their personal challenges.
Mrs. Mary Jane DeSaro provides assistance in Reading/Writing and Mathematics in grades 1-4. Students who need assistance receive direct support using research-based assessments, intervention and ongoing monitoring. Academic support is done through both small group and individualized instruction.
Who makes the referral? The grade/homeroom teacher refers a student who needs extra assistance or support to the academic support teacher. The academic support teacher then works collaboratively with the referring teacher to support each student.
Educational Services Commission (ESC) provides academic support to students who show need. Those students who have an IEP are provided with one period per week of Supplemental Instruction in their area of greatest need. When funding is available, those students may also receive one period per week during the school day and/or one period per week after school of additional supplemental instruction.
Students whose standardized test scores meet specified levels qualify for one period per week of Compensatory Education in Reading, Writing, and/or Math. Parents are notified by mail if their child qualifies for these services. A permission Form 407 is required to be signed.
